Japan's payment culture remained cash-heavy until recently. The market is now rapidly digitizing — PayPay leads QR/wallet adoption, cards (with JCB as a major domestic network) are growing, and konbini (convenience-store cash voucher) remains popular for B2C. Card fees are notably high vs other developed markets.
The local rails merchants must support to convert Japan customers.
Konbini payment lets customers complete e-commerce checkout and then pay cash at any major Japanese convenience store chain (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson). It's used by ~10-15% of Japanese e-commerce buyers, especially for younger and older demographics.
Japanese interchange has been higher than EU or US for historical reasons, though it has come down. Typical merchant fees are 2.5-4% — higher than the US (2.6-2.9%) and EU (1.4-2%). JCB routing can sometimes be cheaper for domestic transactions.
